A Village in the City

  • The village’s history, from its early township years of the 1860s to 2010, holds many examples of its residents’ courage, resilience and optimism.

  • This book, commissioned by the St. Anthony Historical Society, tells the story of the remarkable people who worked lovingly and for decades to build a small-town village in the heart of the Twin Cities.

  • Written by Gail D. Olson, former reporter for the Northeaster for 30+ years who had written many stories of St. Anthony’s past for the newspaper’s Dateline: Northeast history section.

  • Published in 2011, it is now sold out and out of print. It is available for viewing at the St. Anthony Village Branch Library and at the St. Anthony Village City office.

World War II Courage and Survival

  • Stories from the folks back home

  • Stories of local men and women who served abroad and at home and of an Estonian refugee who lived through the war as a child, was resettled to America in 1950 with her mother, grandmother and sister, and moved as a wife and mother to St. Anthony in 1965.

  • An illustrated children’s history of St. Anthony perfect for sharing with your children or grandchildren.

  • Written by Gail D. Olson, former reporter for the Northeaster for 30+ years who had written many stories of St. Anthony’s past for the newspaper’s Dateline: Northeast history section.

  • Illustrated by Sarah Gunderson, the art department director at St Anthony Village High School, she creates a variety of artworks from watercolor, pen and ink, and mixed media.

  • Design and layout by Mary Henry, a former teacher at SAV High School, she works primarily in photography, graphic design and filmmaking.

  • Published in 2013, it is available for sale at the St. Anthony Village City Office.

Hit the Deck and Pray

  • A collection of stories about those affected by the devastating F-3 tornado that struck St. Anthony Village, on April 26, 1984.

  • The tornado’s path was a quarter of a mile wide and two miles long with wind speeds estimated at 150 to 200 miles per hour.

  • Scores of people injured and tragically one woman died.

  • Many homes and commercial buildings, including Apache Plaza Shopping Mall, were badly damaged or destroyed.
