POSITION DESCRIPTION PRESIDENT

Pending Vacancy

The St. Anthony Historical Society (the Society) seeks a volunteer with an interest in the history of St. Anthony Village to serve as the president of the Society.

Background

The Society is a tax-exempt, IRS 501(c)(3) entity. It is a volunteer-led organization that relies on people who have an interest in the history of St. Anthony Village and the preservation of that history. The Society has been in existence for many years. It is an affiliate of the Minnesota Historical Society.

The Board has embraced a forward-looking digital presence for the Society, and the current president is stepping down to focus on furthering the digital direction of the organization. A series of digital videos on the history of St. Anthony Village have been developed. The videos are posted to the Society’s Facebook page and are also available on YouTube.

Recently the Society’s Board of Trustees (Board) has expressed an interest in submitting a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grant request to the Minnesota Historical Society, seeking funds to enhance the Society’s archiving capabilities.

The Board meets regularly, with one of those meetings used as the Society’s annual meeting. The Board has discussed the possibility of establishing a committee structure to bring more volunteers into the organization, and to focus on specific activities such as fundraising, communications and marketing, archiving of historical artifacts, and so forth.

The Position

The president is a volunteer, non-compensated voting member of the Society’s Board of Trustees. The president is elected by the Society’s membership at the annual meeting, or by the Board if a vacancy occurs between annual meetings.

The president, in conjunction with the Society vice president, secretary, treasurer, and other Trustees, establishes a vision and direction for the Society. The specific duties of the president are nominal but important. They include establishing the agendas for meetings, and leading (presiding over) meetings of the Board.

Qualities of an appropriate person include organizational skills and a love of history, and particularly the history of St. Anthony Village.

There is a desire that the president take a leadership role in collaborating with the community and historical organizations.

There is no requirement that the president, any officers, or Trustees, be residents of St. Anthony Village.
